SOS: Urgent appeal to all international humanitarian agencies.
Moadamiyeh, Damascus province, 28-06-2013: Five thousand (5,000) families are trapped under relentless regime bombardment and a crippling siege in Moadamiyeh, with regime forces now completely cutting off all food and medical supplies for months.
The Syrian Media Centre is issuing a distress call to the international community and international humanitarian agencies to live up to their legal and ethical responsibilities by taking urgent action to save the lives of thousands of people, mostly women and children, in Moadamiyeh.
These people, all civilians, cannot obtain even basic food supplies to sustain themselves, with all supplies of vegetables, fruit and even bread, cut off by the regime, without even flour to cook with. The siege by Assad’s forces means that there is also a complete lack of basic medicines. This catastrophic situation is further exacerbated by the regime’s deliberate cutting off of all supplies of water, electricity, all fuel and communications for almost eight months.
The Syrian Media Center has confirmed that these practices by the Assad regime violate all the rules of international humanitarian law, which strictly prohibits the purposeful starvation of civilians or attacks on, or destruction or withholding of materials essential for the civilian population’s survival as methods of warfare.
The Syrian Media Center also confirms that the majority of those affected by this brutal siege and the regime’s policy of purposeful starvation are women, children and wounded people. There are an estimated 6,000 children and women and more than 850 wounded people in urgent need of immediate and life-saving humanitarian and medical assistance in Moadamiyeh, with over 5,000 families under siege and facing imminent starvation.
